REPORTS AND ARTICLES
NEW NADE BOARD MEMBERS 2007-2009
Hilda Barrow
NADE President

NADE members have chosen Dr. Rosemary Karr as President-Elect and Jeanine Lewis as Treasurer for the 2007-2009 NADE Board.

Rosemary is a professor of Developmental Mathematics at Collin College in Plano, Texas.  She has served in many capacities in professional organizations including President of TADE, Treasurer of the 2003 NADE Conference, and Treasurer of CRLA/CASP Conference 2006.  Her goals for NADE are to promote legislative awareness of the goals of Developmental Education, to continue partnerships with other educational organizations, and to continue NADE’s efforts with membership, participation, and professional development.

Jeanine is a professor of Developmental Mathematics at Aims Community College in Greeley, Colorado.  She has served as President, President-Elect, and Treasurer of CoADE and was a part of the NADE Conference Committee in 1997.  Her goals for NADE are to maintain NADE’s strong fiscal position and to seek ways to strengthen the association’s financial base.  She wants to continue the communication between chapter and national treasurers and to serve as a resource for chapter treasurers.

The current NADE Board congratulates these two outstanding women for their achievements and appreciates their willingness to accept the responsibility of serving our members.  We hope you will join us by supporting them as they assume these demanding leadership roles.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER AND TO TREASURE
Hilda Barrow
NADE President

This is my final newsletter article as NADE President and a difficult one to write, so I hope you will forgive me if I ramble.  Sherry has been patient with me this time as I searched for the right words and the tone that I wanted.  My experience as NADE President began with shock and awe, continued with anxiety and awe, moved on to determination, some confidence, and, yes, awe, until finally I have come to some satisfaction with my role this year.  I am still in awe, not so much the “fearful” connotation of the word as with the amazement and respect for this organization and its members.

I have said, so many times that I’m sure it has become boring, that our work as professionals in Developmental Education, Learning Assistance, and experts in teaching and learning strategies is the most important work in Higher Education.  No one else understands students the way that we do, nor does anyone else know how to move them through personal and academic barriers.  As I have traveled this year and met colleagues throughout this country and internationally, I am more convinced than ever that the expertise we offer is the saving grace for underprepared and non-traditional students.  This expertise is not limited to the size of the school or the program or to institutional support.  All of us—two-year, four-year, public, and private—have a spirit and dedication to those students who need the extra pat on the back or kick in the behind.  We are innovative, creative, and professional.

The experiences I have had this year would not have been available to me without this office as NADE President, and I will be forever grateful to the membership for their trust and confidence in me.  I have been proud to represent NADE at other professional conferences:  NYCLSA, NCLCA, CRLA, LADE, and FACE (our United Kingdom counterpart).  This year, the Board has worked diligently on many projects such as updating the Handbook, working with colleagues in Hawaii to establish a new chapter, PacADE, which will be chartered at the conference, and assuring that future conferences will be of the quality that our members expect.  As a result of the Blue Ribbon Commission Report, we have begun a task force to investigate the possibility of a new professional organization of NADE and CRLA members.

My fellow officers, Gerry McBroom, Mickey Hay, Susan Ertel, and Paul Hrabovsky, have been amazing in their support of me personally and in their commitment to our organization.  I am positive that Gerry, Mickey, Susan, and the new members, Rosemary Karr and Jeanine Lewis, will continue the projects we have begun and will work to make NADE even stronger.  I am also grateful for the experience of former presidents Pat Newell and Dessie Williams and former vice president Sonja Strahm as I have called on them many times this year for advice.

I could not have accepted this role nor given it the time it deserved without the support, love, and understanding of my colleagues at Pitt Community College.  They exemplify the qualities that every developmental educator should possess and have been extremely patient with me and have picked up several of my responsibilities so that I could attend to NADE business.  Each of them could be a NADE officer, and I know we will see them in many leadership roles.

Finally, NADE members, I hope that you will continue your commitment to our organization through your membership, recruitment of other members, and becoming involved in leadership of your chapters and serving on committees and SPIN groups.  You are our greatest resource; the Board merely serves your needs and interests.

Thank you for allowing me to enjoy the most rewarding professional experience of my life.

PIECING IT TOGETHER
Dessie S. Williams
NADE 2007 Conference Co-Chair

P – I – E – C – I – N – G  It Together”…there you have the theme of the NADE 2007 Conference to be held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, Nashville, Tennessee, March 21-24, 2007.  And one might ask how NADE came to select such a different kind of theme for this year’s conference—different from the usual verbiage of methods, learning styles, pedagogy, theories, and so on.

Actually, as a bit of history, several NADE Boards ago a moratorium was declared among NADE and its reciprocal organizations.  It was agreed that each association would leave open the venues and dates for their 2007 conferences—with the intent of having one major conference.  These plans did not come to fruition, thus leaving NADE with two years out to prepare for this year’s event.  With the difficulty of finding a NADE chapter to host the conference within this short timeframe remaining, the Board, under the Presidency of Pat Newell, agreed to “Piece It Together,” organizing an annual meeting hosted by current and past Boards and chapters across the country.

It has been a great experience, working/collaborating with chapter leaders and bringing in the combined expertise and wisdom of past NADE officers.  This Conference promises to be one of the greatest ever…pieced together, yes…but masterfully tuned and ordered by some of NADE’s finest.  Please join our NADE Board and 2007 Conference Team in Nashville for an exchange of professional development, networking, and just plain fun!
