NADE 2008 IN BOSTON
Mickey Hay
NADE Vice-President
Planning that started in Albuquerque in 2005 is coming together to ensure a wonderful week for all.

Carol O'Shea is flooded with registrations, and rooms at the Marriott are sold out. But never fear! There are 6 hotels within tea-dumping distance of the Marriott, and we will take care of your needs. Our workshops are set and should be online by the time you read this. Food has been tasted and ordered--you won't be disappointed! Our Newcomer's Team has prepared a wonderful welcome and introduction to Boston and NADE that we hope will have you quacking up. Local groups are poised to entertain you at the Opening Reception, and our LAANE locals are ready to accompany you to dinner on Thursday and Friday nights. Finally, the Team is working with the local forecasters to make sure that Winter has had its fill of storms so that you will get here on time.

See you soon in Bahston!

MEET THE NEWLY ELECTED OFFICERS
Geraldine McBroom
NADE President

NADE members have elected the following to NADE offices:

  President-Elect: Karen Patty-Graham
  Vice President: Joyce Brasfield Adams
  Secretary: Nwachi Tafari

The NADE Executive Board for 2008-09 will be composed of these newly elected officers as well as Rosemary M. Karr, currently NADE President-Elect, and Treasurer Jeanine Lewis. The new officers will be joining current Executive Board members for training activities preceding and during our annual conference in Boston. The 2008-09 Executive Board will be installed Saturday, March 1, during the President’s Breakfast at the conference.

Karen Patty-Graham’s service to NADE has been great. She served two terms as NADE Vice President, supporting annual conference teams as well as co-chairing the 1994 and 2004 NADE annual conferences in Kansas City and in St. Louis. She is currently NADE’s representative to the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), has served as co-chair of NADE’s Placement and Membership Committees, and was President of MRADE. Karen was inducted as an ACDEA Fellow in 2006 and has received numerous NADE awards.  Karen holds degrees in Elementary Education (B.S. Ed.), Developmental Reading (M.Ed.), and Instructional Process/Curriculum and Instruction (Ed.D.) She is retired from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, having served as the Director of Instructional Services. Karen “Iooks forward to an exciting year continuing the chapter development work the current Board has undertaken and thanks the NADE members for the opportunity to serve with the incoming Board.”

Joyce Brasfield Adams comes to NADE’s vice presidency having been the President of the Mississippi Association for Developmental Education (MADE). In addition to a number of state and college teams, she served on the Nashville conference Welcoming Committee. Joyce is a Study Skills Instructor and Lab Manager in the Nursing Allied Health Center at Hinds Community College in Jackson, MS. Her degrees are in Speech Therapy (B.A.), Special Education (M.A.), and Vocational Special Needs (Ed.S.)  Joyce writes, “I thank the membership for entrusting me with this opportunity to make a national difference in Developmental Education.”

Incoming Secretary Nwachi Tafari is the Division Chair of Developmental Education at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, NC. He also serves as the Associate Director for the Kellogg Institute and as an Associate Researcher at the National Center for Developmental Education. Nwachi has a B.A. in English Literature, M.A. in Publications Design, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education. He is a member of NCADE and has been a member of DEAM. Upon learning of his selection, Nwachi wrote, “I am honored. This is one of the proudest moments in my life, and I am proud to serve you all.”

It is, indeed, a great honor to serve the members of NADE, and I am confident that these newly elected officers will work hard for our organization and the field of Developmental Education. I encourage members to support the officers as they take on their new roles. The new officers are volunteers who have agreed to work for NADE members in addition to their already full lives as Development Educators. On behalf of the current Board, I wish them a successful upcoming year.

OFFICE NOMINATIONS FOR 2009-2010
Geraldine McBroom
NADE President

The 2007-08 NADE Executive Board has passed an extension of the deadline for 2009-10 officer nominations. The new deadline will be September 15, 2008. This extension is intended to give a little more time (from the previous August 15th deadline) for members to return to their campuses in the fall before nominations are due. It will still allow enough time for the ballots to be created, printed, and mailed; votes to be cast; and results to be determined and announced. The Board has also considered electronic ballots but did not change the process this year.

The positions which will be open for the 2009-10 elections are President-Elect and Treasurer. If you are interested for yourself or another NADE member, be sure to go to the NADE web site for the nomination form: www.nade.net

September 15th will be here before you know it, so start now to think about your nominations.

CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES
Geraldine McBroom
NADE President

On the last ballot, the NADE Executive Board agreed to propose a change to the NADE Constitution and By-Laws that would expand the Emeritus Council to include all past officers, not just past presidents, and rename it the “Emeritus Cabinet.” Members agreed that this was a good idea, passing the amended wording. Now, the NADE Secretary and Chair of the Constitution Committee will change this in the Constitution and Bylaws.

This new structure will allow all past officers to share their experiences and wisdom with current boards, committees, SPINs, and chapters. The intent is that this change will have no additional financial implications: only past presidents will continue to receive lifetime memberships, and the annual conference event will most likely not be a luncheon but rather a meeting with lighter fare. The name “Cabinet” better fits the purpose of this group since the members will serve as resources, not as decision makers.

The Past President of NADE will continue to chair the Emeritus Cabinet; therefore, after our conference in Boston, you'll be hearing from me. I will be compiling a list-serve of Cabinet members so, if you are a past officer, please be sure to send me your current contact information (gerry@cnm.edu). I look forward to meeting with this group at the 2009 conference in Greensboro.

CHAPTER NEWS!
Rosemary Karr
NADE President-Elect

As the annual conference approaches, be aware that each Chapter in good standing will receive one (1) conference fee waiver to be used for the President-Elect, provided that officer attends Leadership Congress. That meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 27th, 2008, 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 pm. If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

After spending almost 10 months as the primary Chapter contact from the NADE Executive Board, I realize a brief discussion of grant opportunities might also be beneficial. While funding is limited, each Chapter in good standing is eligible for $1500 of NADE grant money annually!

Subject to availability of funds, chapters are limited to one Type A grant per fiscal year, one Type B grant per fiscal year, and one Type C grant per fiscal year with reimbursement of approved expenditures up to $500.

q       Type A helps offset the expense to bring an Executive Board or Emeritus Council member to speak at a chapter conference or event.

q       Type B funds a special project including website development, marketing tool development, and membership promotions.

q       Type C supports Certification Institutes at the chapter level.

For details, please go to the NADE website www.nade.net under Chapters, Chapter Leadership Handbook.

I am looking forward to meeting with you in Boston!

NADE BUSINESS
Susan Ertel
NADE Secretary

The NADE Executive Board has made extensive use of monthly conference call meetings to conduct NADE business and to facilitate in the completion of one of our goals: timely communication. Keeping up to date with NADE business in a monthly meeting also allows us to be more productive when we have our face-to-face meetings as well. So far this past year, we met in Nashville, Tennessee, in March; held a conference call in April; met in St. George, Utah, in May; held conference calls in June, July, and August; met in Boston, Massachusetts, in September; and held conference calls in October, November, December, and January. Our next face-to-face meeting will be in Boston in February prior to the annual conference. One of our rationales for using conference calls rather than face-to-face meetings directly relates to the increased fuel costs associated with flying. We have used our two-hour conference calls wisely each month, with plenty of asynchronous email discussion and voting on almost a daily basis.

However, along the way, we do experience glitches which appear to derail our efforts to communicate in a timely manner. Recently, several sets of NADE Executive Board minutes were posted incorrectly to a previous year’s board on the NADE website, and many of you may have wondered, “Where’s my Executive Board? And what have they been doing?” At present, that problem has been corrected, and with a little more work on my part, the minutes from our last four conference calls will be posted as well. So, check out the website for updates on all the NADE Executive Board business. Always remember to browse through the “Be Sure to Check Out” section for our newest information, updates, and upcoming events.

Typically, in our monthly conference calls and daily email communication, we deal with motions concerning everything from NADE grants for chapters to approving fee waiver lists for the upcoming annual conference to finalizing sections of the updated and revised NADE Policy Handbook. Also, we answer questions and provide guidance for the conference planning teams, approve logos, themes, and keynote speakers for the upcoming conferences to ensure that our membership has a quality experience at the annual conference, and we work with the Certification Council, committees, and SPINS to help them better assist you.

Being on the NADE Executive Board is challenging, time-intensive, and rewarding. We hope that you, the individual member of NADE, will take the time to look at the website, read through our minutes, and become an active participant in the “business” of NADE. I look forward to seeing you at the annual conference in Boston, especially to your attendance at the NADE Business Meeting, Friday, February 29, at 7:30 a.m.

ACDEA CHANGES ITS NAME TO CLADEA
Russ Hodges
CLADEA Chair

According to Hunter Boylan, “the American Council of Developmental Education Associations (ACDEA) was established in 1996 to promote greater cooperation, coordination, and communication among professional organizations concerned with learning assistance and developmental education.” In August 2007, Boylan hosted a committee charged with reviewing the Council’s constitution, mission, and name. On November 2, 2007, at CRLA’s Portland conference, members of the Council adopted the committee’s new vision, mission, and bylaws. A new name was also adopted to better describe the group’s member associations—Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Associations (CLADEA).

CLADEA’s newly crafted vision is to “Provide leadership and a unified voice to advance the profession of postsecondary learning assistance and developmental education.” The mission is to “foster mutual support among national and international organizations dedicated to postsecondary learning assistance or developmental education.” According to the new bylaws, the purposes of the Council are to “coordinate the work of its members, promote collaboration among its members, serve as a forum for effective communication among its members, provide leadership on policy development in postsecondary education, recognize outstanding contributors to the field of postsecondary learning assistance and developmental education, encourage the development of new professionals and future leaders in the field, endorse standards of practice and professional ethics, and advocate for professional development and research in the field.”

Boylan’s term as chair of the Council expired this past fall. Russ Hodges of Texas State University-San Marcos was elected chair and will serve a two-year-term. The Council has named Johanna Dvorak of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as chair of a newly formed commission to set criteria for certification endorsement. Once the criteria are established, each member organization may apply for certification endorsement by the Council. CLADEA’s members include the Association for the Tutoring Profession (ATP), the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA), the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE), the National Center for Developmental Education (NCDE), and the National College Learning Center Association (NCLCA). The next meeting of CLADEA will be held at ATP’s national conference in early April.

Ferris State University invites you to learn about a program vital to its students' success...

  MARCH 17-18, 2008

Ferris State University
Big Rapids, Michigan

What is Structured Learning Assistance (SLA)?
Developed at Ferris State University, the SLA system was designed and piloted in 1993. It was established to help increase the number of students passing some historically high-risk-for failure courses, targeting courses rather than students. The SLA program bears some similarities to other supplemental instruction programs, but offers the structure necessary to effectively reach all students, including academically unmotivated and under-prepared students. Thus, SLA works with courses across the curriculum, from developmental to upper division.

The Symposium
The SLA Symposium will provide training in the development and operation of SLA at your campus. Day One will include sessions on program development, assessment, budgeting, faculty and facilitator training, and program operations. Day Two will include "SLA in Action," with opportunities to observe workshops and meet with SLA faculty and facilitators. Upon completion, symposium attendees will be prepared with the information and tools to pilot SLA at their own institutions.
