NADE Position Statements

NADE Position Statement on Part-Time Faculty (September 2005)

As educators in developmental education, we strive to create educational opportunities for every postsecondary learner as a matter of equity. However, these efforts are undermined by the institutional practice of employing part-time and contingent faculty on largely unequal terms compared to full-time faculty. To that measure, NADE believes that all faculty should be treated equally in terms of respect, compensation, benefits, and opportunities regardless of their employment status.

That Are Endorsed by the NADE Executive Board

The NADE Executive Board has endorsed seven recommendations published by The New York College Learning Skills Association (NYCLSA). NYCLSA is also an official chapter of NADE. These seven recommendations are: (1) Recognize developmental education and learning assistance as central to the institution's function of educating students; (2) Hire appropriately credentialed, trained, educated, and experienced faculty and professional staff. Provide continuing support and sufficient funding for existing faculty and staff to remain current in the field; (3) Centralize developmental programs and learning assistance programs in a comprehensive organizational structure; (4) Require mandatory assessment of all incoming students and use multiple measures for this assessment; (5) Based on the results of assessment and an advisement process, require mandatory placement of students; (6) For all developmental students, maintain the full availability of services of a comprehensive learning assistance program that addresses the academic, technological, and affective needs of students; (7) Support on-going, systematic and comprehensive evaluation of programs, courses, and services. These position statements are available in two forms from this web site: (a) executive summary; (b) complete text.
